The Mobile Minute: One Billion Android Devices Were Shipped In 2013

What device are you reading this article on? A Windows desktop? An iPad running iOS? A Nokia Windows Phone? An Etch-A-Sketch? Well, whatever you’re using, we have news for you: the future is beyond skewed toward the Android operating system. According to data from Gartner, about 2.3 billion devices were shipped in 2013, and of those devices, about .9 billion were running the Android operating system. (For purposes of comparison, roughly .3 million were Windows devices, and .27 were Apple.) Android is bigger than its next two competitors combined, and then some. That’s domination! Over the next few years, this 38% share of all devices shipped is projected to continue increasing, and reach 46% in 2015.

What’s fueling Android’s success?

First, there’s the steady migration from desktop to mobile, which is boosting mobile shipments. In fact, desk-based and notebook PC shipments declined about 12% from 2012 to 2013. But this, of course, doesn’t explain why users would be selecting Android devices in particular. To that point, some have observed that this is a simple price-based trend. iOS devices are high-end, expensive devices. Android, on the other hand, tends to be available on more affordable devices. Thus, users buy more Android devices than those running iOS or other less popular systems.

Got it. What does this mean for small business apps and developers?

The most obvious conclusion to draw from the data is to not fall victim to Apple-vision!

A lot of your potential users are not on iOS devices, and while Apple is a premium brand at the front of many people’s minds, the Android masses loom large. When developing an app, be sure that the Android version is every bit as smooth, functional, and well supported as the iOS version.
